| Welcome to the Lawton bilingual family website. We (David and Hannah Lawton) are residents of Bloomfield, Connecticut. English is our native language, and we both learned French while studying and working in France for 4 1/2 and 2 1/2 years, respectively. We speak mostly English to each other, mixing in French words and phrases now and then. We also keep in contact with many friends in France, and hope to return there either to live or to visit for extended periods of time. We have two children -- a daughter, Isabelle, born in October 2003 and a son, Matthew, born in April 2005 -- whom we are raising to speak, read and write in both English and French. This website includes the results of our research into how to do that most effectively. |

| Mission The purpose of this website is to publish one family's progress in raising bilingual children in a monolingual society, where both parents are native speakers of the majority language and have learned the second language as adults. In sharing our experience and resources we hope to aid and encourage other parents who are in a similar situation or who are considering the possibility of using a foreign language with their children, as well as any teachers or researchers who may take an interest in this field of study. We hope to create a community of bilingual families, helping each other meet their unique needs and goals. |
