Finding Children's Books in Foreign Languages

Your local library may stock children's books in your target language. If it does not, it may be
willing to acquire some if you request it. You may also write or call foreign publishers directly,
have friends or family in your foreign country recommend or send you books, or try these
foreign language book distributors:

Do-it-yourself Ideas

Reading
-You can make simple books for young children in their target language using tagboard and
bright pictures. Glue pictures on tagboard pages (or draw your own), write the words, then
laminate or cover with clear contact paper. Punch holes through the pages and bind them
together with yarn or binder rings. Hint: kids love personalized books! Use pictures of their own
toys, pets, family, etc. to create an extra-special book that will hold their interest.
-Ask friends and family from the target culture to write to your children in their language.
-Write notes and letters to your children in their target language.

Writing
-Hold "written conversations" with your children in their target language--write them notes
and have them respond in writing.
-Find a pen friend from the target culture for your children, or have them correspond with
family members in the target culture.

Listening
-Create cassette tapes of yourself and/or a friend/family member singing songs or telling
stories in your children's target language.
-Videotape your experiences with your children's target culture--family gatherings, vacations,
playgroup sessions, etc.
-Videotape your children interacting with other speakers of the target language.
